Martial Arts Mullingar

The Martial Art we teach is called Genbukan Martial Arts and our dojo name is Sanzen Genbukan Dojo.

We are a family run Martial Art that teach children the value of Manners, Discipline and Respect. We teach adults Awareness, Confidence and Self Defence for all situations. We are a very old Martial Art and continue to teach the old ways. Children must learn how to escape from danger and know the difference between right and wrong. A clever Martial Artist does not need to fight but knows how to defend themselves when there is no other option.

Our family run club in Mullingar is designed as a traditional Japanese dojo with male and female changing rooms and a seated area for parents so you can enjoy a coffee and watch the class. We have a relaxed atmosphere but are dedicated to imparting knowledge and good manners while learning self defence with fun and games in a traditional environment

Our adult classes are structured exactly the same as our head dojo in Japan (Honbu) and teach in the traditional Japanese manner. You do not have to be big, strong or very fit to start Martial Arts you just have to walk in the door.

Health benefits:

Traditional Martial Arts are renowned for their health benefits. Fitness will develop over time in a very positive way. What is not so well known is the mental health benefits. When you are learning something that has depth and enjoying yourself at the same time the benefits to mental health are enormous. You are physically and mentally moving all the time. Challenging the body and the mind in a positive environment

We remain true to our traditions and train directly under world renowned Ninpo Grandmaster Shoto Tanemura

ABOUT US

At the Shogun Martial Arts training centre in Mullingar co Westmeath we teach Genbukan Ninpo along with traditional Japanese Jujutsu which itself is a complete Martial Art combining the oldest forms of Koryu Karate as well as weapons and every aspect of unarmed combat. The aim of traditional Martial Arts is to avoid conflict and win without fighting and for that reason the highest level unarmed techniques are trained and mastered both in the body and the mind. Children do not learn how to fight but how not to fight while at the same time capable of defending themselves with confidence and skill through awareness and discipline
Ninpo is an ancient martial art dating back 2,700 years in Japanese recorded history and is passed through the generations via family lines. Traditionally, in any generation there can only be one Grandmaster and keeper of a traditional school.

SWORD AND MIND

Live by the sword, die by the sword is a common saying related to the savagery of war or a lifestyle that would bring about an unhappy ending. The reality of sword training is very different from this and teaches us the culture of the sword because that is where the training brings the person and eventually the personality that becomes intertwined with this culture. It breeds a very different understanding of why one would train with the sword and defines the art in its true light. The culture of the sword is of course intrinsically tied to warfare but it has a disciplined nature and that makes it very different to firing a gun or even training with a knife. There is of course discipline in all weapons training but the Japanese sword was taken to a much higher level and with it those who afford themselves that time and patience in becoming part of that training in its most stringent and controlled manner become enamoured to its power and more so its strength.

At Shogun.ie Navan and Mullingar students come to train for many different reasons, some simply love the culture of Japan and its history. It is important to know that history makes you what you are and by immersing yourself in the culture of what you are learning history becomes a part of you.

The power of a sword is in its cut and ultimately in one who wields it well, but Its strength, when realised, is not one of warfare it is of the forging of a more disciplined mind.

Japan 2015

Japan April 2015

My annual trip to Japan was as always a most memorable time. Having returned to Ireland late Thursday evening 23rd after a very long and arduous journey due to delays that could never shadow the extraordinary that becomes part of a great experience I was happy to be home with my family. My time in Japan was as always one of intense training and valuable teachings that can only come from the wise mind of a great teacher. Imparting knowledge is a great gift and one that few can duly place upon the minds of those who whish to learn, for placing such immeasurable wealth can only be done by those who are trained to the highest level and accord each student the greatest gift, that of knowledge.

1201

As we raise to higher levels our training does not get easier and more effort is required. Those that are raised to higher levels have the greatest distance to fall and must always be mindful of this. Even the grandmaster continually trains in his awareness of this most important point.

Japan was in full bloom at this time of year with cherry blossoms displaying their beautiful pink and white flowers all over the country. In Japanese these are called Sakura and are awaited every year with great excitement. Sakura bloom for approximately one week to 10 days of each year. They are not used for anything just admired for their beauty. In the old koryu schools of which we are one of the last sakura are endemic of the Samurai heart. The true samurai does not walk with big shoulders but appears at times when good is needed. This is the heart of sakura showing the beauty only one time and symbolic of a peaceful nature bringing happiness. It is said in the old Ninja schools that the heart of the Ninja is that of the flower. It is said in the old schools that the Ninja is never seen but his presence is felt. My teacher Grandmaster Shoto Tanemura explained to me that a person who displays a vulgar nature can never be a true martial artist and will always be seen for what they are. Simply look to the Hanna (flower) and you will see this. There is no vulgarity in true beauty.

Japans history in its turbulence managed to somehow create a balance between the beauty of nature and the discipline of the sword. My training this time in Japan was in one of the rare sword schools that are preserved within our system and with grateful acknowledgement to our martial Arts ancestors I can bow in reverence to everything they passed on to us and to my teacher of course who so attentively imparts these wonderful gifts.

1197

One late evening with the Grandmaster and his family we strolled along the Edo river where a vista of Cherry blossoms, Sakura, lined the banks for about 3 miles each illumed by a Japanese lantern that reflected a darting red shimmering light on the water. The grandmaster explained that the trees have a life span very similar to warriors of the Sengoku Jidai (warring period) and subsequently soldiers during periods of war the world over 16-20 years. A short lifespan for a warrior but one that was all too familiar during both world wars.

Their beauty therefore may depict far more than that of a flower but reflect that of a life well lived however short and duty performed no matter how dire the circumstances. We must do boldly what is necessary in our lives but we must do so with manners, discipline and respect and in so doing show the heart of compassion with the strength of bamboo. This will lead to Butoku Martial Virtue and in itself displays the very heart of Sakura. This is the way of the Martial Artist.

Japan as always has fond memories for me and each time is a time to itself where things learned are ingested and nurtured. I look forward to my next journey in October along with a large contingent of Irish students and I am sure each will experience something of Japan in their own way.

Training with The Grandmaster

Training at the highest level is something we all aspire to. This year October 2014 Shogun.ie brought 29 students to the Uk to train directly under Grandmaster Shoto Tanemura. The event took place in Brighton as the first European Tai kai teaching one of the rarest schools of Martial Arts in the world Kijin Chosui Ryu. Head instructor for Ireland Martin O’Raghaillaigh Kyoshi was one of the demonstration group that had the privilege of being on the receiving end of the grandmasters techniques. It was a truly unique experience for students who had the opportunity to see first hand a true Japanese grandmaster.

Kyoshi Martin O’Raghaillaigh has often said that know one can really appreciate the knowledge that a grandmaster has until they experience it for themselves and indeed the unique way in which old style Martial Arts are transmitted to our generation. A generation that is so overwhelmed with modern misconceptions and ideas of what martial Arts really are. Martial Arts are there to impart knowledge that will improve the person. It is there to enable the mind. Having the ability to protect yourself will naturally improve confidence and awareness. A child with a disciplined mind has a greater chance of escaping from danger. An adult with a good level of discipline has the ability to develop a cultured mind which in itself is a form of self defence.
